Project digital.bike.23

As industrial designer I´m occupying myself with e-bikes since more than ten years.  I´m asked often: In which direction will these vehicles evolve? To find a realistic answer, I decided to create the project digital.bike.23 – the development of an e-bike for 2023.

The project will be split into three stages:

  1. research with seven main topics (previously)
    • history of electric bicycles
    • social developments
    • technical developments
    • material developments
    • accessory developments
    • production and removal developments
    • digital developments
  2. design / conception
    • sustainable e-bike via project pad
    • e-bike vision for 2033
  3. development and realization of a model of the sustainable e-bike

The blog will accompany each stage of the project.

The target is to answer the question: how will a sustainable e-bike look like in 2023? For this project part I´m looking for interested and informed people to participate. Please feel free to contact me for more information about the pad. You have ideas, which you always wanted to develop or you like to create e-bikes in a team via internet? Great, Let´s do it!

 

2017: Restart and new Direction: “ebike-P23” turns into “digital.bike.23”

Due to other priorities I had to set the project aside in 2013. But it stucked in my mind like a spike. In 2017 I suddenly knew how to continue:

    • digital developments
    • production and removal developments


Open Source for e-bikes?

Each manufacturer creates his own software for maintenance purposes – comfortably to use via app. But often it is not clear for the user, what happens during this process. And: where does all the requested data go? Regarding the fascinating developments in the open source sector concerning smartphones and other devices, I asked myself: How about open source apps for e-bikes? How could one look like in 2023? How about a possibility to establish an open source connection between the hardware components of the Digital.Bike.23 and its software? Is EnergyBus an option to integrated an independent standard?

How could a sustainable bike look like?

Actual e-bikes are large material graves. Beside the common bike materials they additionally generate the same sort of waste as smartphones and other electric devices – in larger scales, unfortunately. What could the next step in direction to a more sustainable bike be? Could 3D-Print be an option?  Or does specially this technology set false signs, because it creates even more waste quality- and quantity wise? Or is it the opportunity to use recycled plastics and individualize the bikes in only one development step? What could Digital.Bike.23 be? A Craddle-to-Craddle-bike? A Fair-bike? A Re-Use-bike?
